The American Hosta Growers Association (AHGA) Hosta of the Year for 2020 is Hosta ‘Dancing Queen.’
According to the Missouri Botanical Garden … “ ‘Dancing Queen’ was developed and introduced in 2005 by Kent Terpening of Syracuse, NY, using Hosta ‘Split Personality’ as the seed parent and an unknown pollen parent.”
The following description is from Walters Gardens – waltersgardens.com
A unique large, yellow hosta from Kent Terpening. Unlike other yellow hostas which emerge or turn chartreuse, ‘Dancing Queen’ emerges bright yellow and remains yellow all season long. The large leaves have a prominent pie crust edge, adding even more pizzazz to this colorful hosta.
In mid- to late-summer, the foliage lightens to soft yellow and the clump is topped with pale lavender flowers.
John O’Brien on Hosta ‘Dancing Queen’
“Very few of the 25 American Hosta Growers Association ‘Hostas of the Year’ have been a solid color. The 2020 selection of Hosta ‘Dancing Queen’ is the first to be all yellow.
‘Dancing Queen’ is a showstopper as it emerges bright yellow in the spring. This selection features an amazing pie-crust edge.
At O’Brien’s we sell most of our ‘Dancing Queen’ early each season. As summer progresses the colors are not as vibrant, yet if surrounded by dark green plants it’s still a standout.
This cultivar is widely available and should be easy to find in your local Garden Center. We have a mature clump in our display garden at O’Brien Nursery in Granby.” (O’Brien Nurserymen)
About the AHGA
With the increasing number of hosta cultivars being introduced each year it is increasingly difficult for nursery owners and gardeners to choose just the right hostas for their sales areas and gardens. To this end the American Hosta Growers Association established the AHGA Hosta of the Year in 1996.
It is selected by a vote of AHGA members. Award winners are hostas that are good garden plants in all regions of the country, are widely available in sufficient supply, and retail for about $15 in the year of selection.
