By Will Rowlands
Tovah Martin’s latest book, The Garden in Every Sense and Season – A Year of Insights and Inspiration from My Garden, came out this spring. Tovah is one of our favorite writers and we recommend this book to anyone who wants to connect with their garden on a deeper level.
Tovah gives a lot of presentations and her interactions with attendees provides her with a good look at what’s going on with gardeners. This has shown her that many gardeners are so busy with their chores that they can miss the many joys of gardening.
Her new book is organized by season and each season is broken down into the five senses. In these sections Tovah highlights sensual treats for gardeners to look for and appreciate.
Reading this book is like spending a year gardening with Tovah, looking over her shoulder and hearing her thoughts. There’s a ton of information on gardening but it’s also about living in the present and enjoying the journey.
In some martial arts, mental aspects are taught alongside physical techniques. In a way, that’s what Tovah is doing here. There’s gardening and there’s how to think about gardening.
Your garden may be pretty but ask yourself if it’s connected to the local ecology. Are you attuned to nature?
Or, as Tovah puts it … Do the finches like what you’ve done?
